India is a land of diverse cultures. With diverse cultures come diverse festivals. With the festive season on in full swing (not to mention the wedding season too), December, as always, has the longest list of festivals and events of the year. So, without much ado, here’s the complete list of all major festivals and events that will be held in December.
1. Konark Festival
When: December 1 to December 5 (6 pm to 8.30 pm)
What:The Konark Dance festival is an annual cultural festival held at the Sun Temple in Konark in December. It is organized by the Odisha Tourism Development Cell in order to promote young talent and tourism in Odisha. The dance hall called the
Natya Mandir is an intricately designed space that oozes of art. The festival has been conducted since 1989 and the stage has been set on fire by celebrated performers from around India. Some of the dance styles performed include Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri and Chau. If you’re looking forward to a longer stay, the OTDC offers

2. International Sand Art Festival
When: December 1 to December 5
What: This festival coincides with the Konark Dance Festival that is held near by. The sand festival has over 35 stalls for international and national participants. This is one of the few sand art festivals in India that witnesses participation by several differently abled artistes.

3. Hornbill Festival

What:The Hornbill festival is considered to be one of the biggest festivals in north east India. Over 17 traditional tribes of the region come together and celebrate this festival. The highlights of the event are the traditional performances, wrestling, archery and chilly eating competitions along with beauty contests and fashion shows that span across 10 days. The best highlight of the festival is the rock concert where local as well as international bands perform to a packed venue.
This year, the tentative line-up includes The Music of ABBA Arrival from Sweden and a headlining act by Halloween from Germany.

4. Festa De Diu

What:Credited to be Asia’s longest beach festival, Festa De Diu spans across three months. Music concerts, carnivals and performances by renowned artistes like Vir Das, Shreya Ghosal, Indian Ocean and several others, this festival is looked forward to be many. The best part about this festival is the fact that you can fix a date and time as per your convenience to visit this Union Territory. There are heritage walks organized along with jam sessions and workshops. How cool is that!?

5. Feast of Francis Xavier
When: December 3
What: The feast of St Francis Xavier is held in Old Goa every year. There is a shrine of the mummified body of St Francis Xavier placed in a silver casket in the chapel of Basilica of Bom Jesus. The Basilica was built in 1605. The saint’s death anniversary falls on December 3 and Goa is visited of Christian missionaries from around the world. This feast is held in honor and as homage to the saint. In fact, till 1994, the body was kept on display for the people, however, since the condition of the body has deteriorated in the past two decades, it is kept at an elevation, within the basilica but out of immediate public view.

6. Baccardi NH7 Weekender, Pune

When: December 4 to December 6

7. NH7 Weekender, Bangalore

When: December 4 to December 6
What: The Bangalore edition of NH 7 will be held simultaneously with its Pune cousin. Currently in its fifth edition, NH7 Weekender at Bangalore is all prepped to blow your mind away with the bad-ass line-up that includes AR Rahman, Mark Ronson and the Flying Lotus.

9. Delhi Street Food Festival
When: December 11 to December 13
What: Delhi can definitely boast of some lip-smacking street food to die for. The National Association of Street Vendors of India is hosting every chaat lover’s paradise, a street food festival that will offer food for all types of street food lovers. We really don’t see why you even want a reason to go here!?

10. Losoong Festival
When: December 12 to December 16
What: Losoong festival marks the end of the harvest season in Sikkim. It is also a thanksgiving festival celebrated by the Lepcha and the Bhutia communities of the north east. Gangtok, Rumtek and several other places host mask dances that have traditional significance. Several performances try to symbolize the victory of good over evil. It is also one of the sacred festivals for the Sikkimese.

11. Madras Music Season
When: December 15, 2015 to January 1, 2016
What: Popularly known as the Chennai Music Festival, this festival calls itself the world’s largest cultural event. Carnatic music and classical dance performances are the highlights of this festival. Over 1,000 performers, both national and international visit Chennai to participate in this festival.

12. Magnetic Fields Festival

13. Enchanted Valley Carnival

What: This music festival will take you through one of the best EDM experiences in India. This year, the line-up has more than 60 renowned artists that will make you groove to their beats. Known as an Adventure in Music, the Enchanted Valley Carnival experience includes camping and adventure sports that take your mood to a whole new level. The lineup includes Tiesto, Fat Boy Slim, and Ferry Corsten.

14. Cochin Carnival
When: December 14, 2015 to January 1, 2016
What: The Kochi Carnival is hosted in order to welcome the New Year. The roots of the festival lie in the the Portuguese New Year celebrations. During the carnival, different forms of cultural activities and sports events are held. The best part about this carnival is the magnificent procession carried out on New Year’s Day.

15. Shilpgram Art and Craft Festival
When: December 21 to December 30
What: The Shilpgram Arts and Craft festival is meant for people who enjoy splurging on handicrafts and items that you’d not find in cities easily. Over 400 artisans and craftsmen from all over India set up stalls here. In fact, this village is set up by the government for just this purpose! Splendid music and dance performances will keep your spirits high as you splurge your way through the fair.

16. Mamallapuram Indian Dance Festival
When: December 21, 2015 to January 21, 2016
What: The Mamallapuram Indian dance festival spans across four weekends. Showcasing classical and folk dances from all over India, with performances on an open-air stage creates a beautiful ambiance for watching mesmerizing performances. The stage is set with a backdrop of the Pallava rocks, significant with large stone carvings and monolithic art sculptures. Mamallapuram Festival is one of the biggest events in the city and draws people from around Tamil Nadu and indeed India.

17. Rann Utsav
When: December 23, 2015 to February 29, 2016
What: The Rann of Kutch is a desert festival that celebrates the vibrant colors of the beautiful salt desert. Kutch is rich in traditions, cultural heritage and definitely a place thriving with handicrafts. During Rann Utsav, the entire place is decorated, fairs are held and folk performances keep the people entertained.

18. Poush Mela
When: December 24 to December 26
What: Poush Mela gets its name from the bengali month of Poush that marks the end of a harvesting season. It features folk music and dance performances, sports competition and hundreds of local handicraft vendors showcasing their ware. Baul music sets the mood for the fair and keeps people entertained.The festival celebrates the founding of Santiniketan, the university town. Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, father of Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore founded the town in the 19th century. The festival starts on the seventh day of the month and ends on the ninth day.

19. Christmas
When: December 25
What: Though the festival is celebrated all over India, Christmas is best experienced in states such as Nagaland and Goa and pockets of metropolitan cities such as Mumbai and Kolkata among others. The birth of Jesus is celebrated with midnight masses and carols and recreating the Nativity scene through plays and decorations.

20. Sunburn Festival, Goa
When: December 27 to December 30
What: Sunburn is considered to be the biggest outdoor dance concert in India. 21. Mt Abu Winter Festival
When: December 29 to December 30
What: Mount Abu is Rajasthan’s only hill station. Each year, this town celebrates a summer festival that is followed by a winter festival. Boat races, horse riding, folk performances and spectacular firework displays are some of the many highlights of this place. You can visit Mount Abu any time of the year, but the winter festival has a lot to offer, especially for travelers.

22. Bishnupur Festival
When: December 27 to December 31
What: The Bishnupur festival celebrates the rich culture and heritage of the terracotta temples. The festival serves as a platform for the exhibition and sale of local handicrafts. The traditional music of Bishnupur attracts people from around West Bengal. There are plenty of options of silk, wood and intricately designed products made by locals themselves. Bishnupur has its own music Gharana and it hosts a fabulous show during the festival.
